China explodes first nuclear weapon (1964)

At 1500 hours on october 16 1964, People's Republic of China successfully exploded their first nuclear bomb. Therefore, China became the fifth country, after US, USSR, Great Britain and France to have the capability of detonating nuclear bombs.

The Chinese started working on nuclear weapons as early as 1953, and China signed a secret agreement with USSR to provide uranium ores in exchange for aid in the nuclear field. After the sino-soviet split, China continued to work on the nuclear weapons, wanting to break the "superpowers' monopoly in nuclear weapons" and also to increase its international prestige. And they indeed had remarkable achievements, the country exploded the first nuclear bomb, launched its first nuclear missile, and detonated its first hydrogen bomb all in a period of 32 months.

This is a significant event- a second communist country is capable of using nuclear weapons. This is definitely not too good a news to the Allies.

Possibility of nuclear war: low
Though another communist country has tested nuclear weapons, there is no sign of much tension and possible frictions that may cause a nuclear war. However, we can be sure that the US would be more cautious in dealing with China.
