Conclusion

After examining various important conflicts in the Cold War, we see that:
  • In the earlier period of the Cold War, when US still had monopoly in nuclear power, a nuclear war was unlikely to have happened.
  • After the Soviet Union developed nuclear weapons, the threat of a nuclear war became very serious.
  • This possibility decreased in the wake of destalinisation.
  • However, with the Cuban Missile crisis, the chances of a nuclear war loomed over the world again, with US and USSR ready for a war at anytime, and fully ready and poised nuclear warheads poised at each other's doorsteps. This was the time where the world was closest to experiencing a nuclear war.
  • After this crisis, the possibility of a nuclear war started to decline, with the US and USSR engaging in proxy wars in the middle east. This is especially so with the help of the SALT talks and the decline of communism.

From this we conclude that for a period of time in the early to middle stages of the cold war, the world was very close to an outbreak of nuclear was, but after that, the nuclear weapons were used mostly for political negotiations.
