Sputnik (1957)

On 4th October 1957, USSR shocked the whole world by putting the first ever artificial satellite into space. The satellite was known at Sputnik 1, which is the Russian pronunciation for Satellite 1. The event triggered off a series of satellite tests from the USSR, collectively known as the Sputnik program. The launching of the satellite also started off the Space Race in addition to the Arms Race during the Cold war.

Possibility of nuclear war: almost zero
The launch of the first artificial satellite would very unlikely be the cause of a nuclear war. Instead, we have it to thank for the fast development of space exploration in the world today.
